With our 1920's artisan bungalow, the siding stands apart a great bit, so we went with the extra thick 1 inch 5/4 HardieTrim boards to get the desired result. If you do end up splitting trim when eliminating it, simply glue it together and after that put a rubber band around it or tape it with masking tape until the glue dries.
